How Much Base & Bedding Material Do I Need for Pavers?

Underestimating base and bedding materials is the most common cause of paver failure. Too little base leads to settling; too little bedding sand makes leveling difficult.

Recommended base depth (minimum):

  • Walkways / patios: 3–6 inches compacted granular base

  • High-traffic patios: 6–8 inches

  • Driveways / heavy loads: 8–12 inches (or more)
    Install in 2–3 inch lifts and compact thoroughly.
