How to Calculate How Much Gravel or Soil You Need (Calgary Guide)
Why Most People Under-Order
The biggest mistake homeowners make?
They calculate square footage — but forget depth.
Landscaping materials are sold by cubic yard, not square foot.
Step 1: Measure Length & Width
Multiply:
Length × Width = Square Feet
Step 2: Decide on Depth
Recommended depths in Calgary:
-
Decorative Rock: 2–3 inches
-
Road Crush Base: 8–12 inches
-
Garden Soil: 6–12 inches
Convert inches to feet:
Divide inches by 12.
Step 3: Convert to Cubic Yards
Formula:
Length × Width × Depth (in feet) ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards
Example: Decorative Rock
10 ft × 20 ft area
3 inches deep (0.25 ft)
10 × 20 × 0.25 = 50 cubic ft
50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards
Order 2 cubic yards.
Why Ordering Slightly Extra Is Smart
Compaction, uneven ground, and settling all affect final volume.
