What Are Recycled Asphalt Millings?

Asphalt millings are produced when existing asphalt pavement is removed or processed for reuse. The resulting material contains crushed aggregate and residual asphalt binder from the original pavement.

Recycled asphalt is commonly used as an alternative surfacing material for private driveways, rural laneways and parking areas. When properly placed and compacted, it can form a relatively firm surface compared with loose, uncompacted material.

Unlike newly laid hot-mix asphalt, recycled asphalt is not supplied as a fresh paving mixture. It should not be expected to create the same smooth, uniformly bonded surface as professionally installed new asphalt pavement.

Material grading, colour, particle size and asphalt binder content may vary between batches. Some loads may contain larger pieces or a broader range of particle sizes.

Installing Recycled Asphalt

Proper site preparation and compaction are important for achieving a durable recycled asphalt surface. The existing ground should be stable, graded appropriately and prepared for the expected traffic.

1. Remove unsuitable vegetation, debris and soft material from the installation area.
2. Establish a suitable grade that directs surface water away from buildings and other sensitive areas.
3. Install or repair the underlying aggregate base where required for soil conditions and vehicle loads.
4. Spread the recycled asphalt evenly at the appropriate loose depth.
5. Compact the material using suitable equipment, such as a vibratory roller or plate compactor, depending on the size of the project.
6. Inspect the finished surface and address uneven areas or drainage concerns.

The required thickness depends on the existing base, expected vehicle traffic, drainage and desired finished surface. Heavily loaded areas may require additional preparation or engineered specifications.

Compaction improves surface stability, but recycled asphalt does not necessarily fuse into a continuous paved surface. Binding results vary with the material and conditions.

Recycled Asphalt vs. Road Crush Gravel

Recycled asphalt and road crush gravel are both used in driveway and access-road projects, but they have different characteristics.

Recycled asphalt contains reclaimed asphalt binder and is commonly selected for its dark appearance and potential to form a firm compacted surface.

Road crush is a crushed aggregate blend typically used where a compactable gravel base or surface is required. The better material depends on the project specifications, underlying soil, drainage and traffic.
