How to Build a Retaining Wall Base
How to Build a Retaining Wall Base
Building a strong retaining wall begins with a properly prepared base. A solid base helps support the wall structure and prevents shifting over time.
Step 1 – Excavate the Area
Excavate the area where the retaining wall will be installed. The trench should be wide enough to accommodate the wall blocks and base material.
Step 2 – Install Base Gravel
Install approximately 6 inches of compacted gravel in the base trench. This gravel layer provides drainage and structural support for the wall.
Step 3 – Level the First Course
The first row of retaining wall blocks must be installed perfectly level. This course determines the alignment of the entire wall.
Step 4 – Backfill Behind the Wall
Drainage gravel should be installed behind the retaining wall blocks to prevent water pressure from building up.
